Structures for Architects

Structures for Architects

by Bryan J . B . Gauld (Author)

Synopsis

This manual has been prepared with the object of helping the student architect gain the essentials of basic structures. The many worked examples included in the text have been selected to show the types of structural problems the recently qualified architect will meet in the field. These examples have been introduced in an effort to reduce the gap between classroom theory and practice. The book has also been designed to help students produce good structural schemes, marrying good design and planning with structural concepts. From the architect's point of view, such concepts will require only basic understanding and a knowledge of the rules of thumb , as any calculations for structures will require the participation of a structural engineer. On the other hand, for small projects the calculations should be well within the capabilities of the architect. These calculations are required to check the safety of the structure, and as such must be clearly presented. The reader is encouraged to follow the procedure and lay-out used in the worked examples of this book. Students of architecture, building and surveying at degree, diploma or professional examination level should find the book of value.
