Blood of Elves (Gollancz S.F.)

by Andrzej Sapkowski (Author)

Synopsis

For more than a hundred years humans, dwarves, gnomes and elves lived together in relative peace. But times have changed, the uneasy peace is over and now the races once again fight each other - and themselves: dwarves are killing their kinsmen, and elves are murdering humans and elves, at least those elves who are friendly to humans ...Into this tumultuous time is born a child for whom the witchers of the world have been waiting. Ciri, the granddaughter of Queen Calanthe, the Lioness of Cintra, has strange powers and a stranger destiny, for prophecy names her the Flame, one with the power to change the world - for good, or for evil ...Geralt, the witcher of Rivia, has taken Ciri to the relative safety of the Witchers' Settlement, but it soon becomes clear that Ciri isn't like the other witchers. As the political situation grows ever dimmer and the threat of war hangs almost palpably over the land, Geralt searches for someone to train Ciri's unique powers. But someone else has an eye on the young girl, someone who understand exactly what the prophecy means - and exactly what Ciri's power can do. This time Geralt may have met his match.

Book Overview: A Polish superstar comes to Britain! Andrzej Sapkowski is one of Europe's biggest authors, a bestseller not only in his native Poland, but in every country in which he's published. 'The epic world of Sapkowski is a dreamland for those who are young, their age notwithstanding' POLITYKA 'Like a complicated magic spell, a Sapkowski novel is a hodgepodge of fantasy, intellectual discourse, dry humour and economics' TIME 'What makes Sapkowski remarkably stand out from the multitude of frantasy writers is a sense of humour, a lucid narration, fast-paced dialogues - simply a true joy of reading' PLAYBOY 'Sapkowski has no equal, not only in the field of fantasy, but in Polish popular fiction in general' GAZETA WYBORCZA (Poland's biggest daily newspaper) THE WITCHER, a new computer game based on Sapkowski's novels, has become an international bestseller for Atari.

Media Reviews
Sapkowski's world, and the sense of depth, is reminiscent of Middle Earth. And while he includes all the traditional fantasy characters you would expect, Sapkowski also manages to revitalize the genre with energetic and compelling writing. A breath of fresh air in a well-worn genre. Don't miss it! DREAMWATCH TOTAL SCI FI The character interplay is complex, unsentimental and anchored in brutal shared history. All bodes well for twisty plotting in future volumes. -- Nic Clarke SFX
