Candyland

by Ed McBain (Author), Evan Hunter (Author)

Synopsis

Benjamin Thorpe is married, a father, a successful Los Angeles architect - and a man obsessed. Alone in New York City on business, he spends the empty hours of the night in a compulsive search for female companionship. His dizzying descent leads to an early morning confrontation in a mid-town brothel, and a subsequent searing self-revelation. Cathy Frese - aka Heidi the 'teenage' hooker - finishes up for the night and walks back to her studio apartment. But she never arrives. Her strangled, used and mutilated body is found in an alleyway the next morning. These two lost souls had crossed briefly in the night, and as the foggy events of the night before come into sharper focus, Benjamin Thorpe becomes an ever more possible suspect...

Book Overview: Alone, Evan Hunter and Ed McBain have over the years forged two separate and distinct careers - despite being one and the same person. 'Together' for the first time, they have written a novel that is at once shocking, bold and compulsively readable. In both guises, Evan has built up an intensely loyal fan-base which waits on his every release. In particular, Ed McBain's 87th Precinct series has established him as one of the world's top crime writers - recently winning the prestigious CWA/Cartier Diamond Dagger - the first US writer to do so. This ambitious novel will be snapped up by both sets of readers. 'This suspense-filled, cleverly plotted novel is a marathon of nail-biting tension from beginning to end' Booklist on Criminal Conversation 'McBain is so good that he ought to be arrested' Publishers Weekly

Media Reviews
'...atmospheric writing at it's best...this is a masterful piece of work by the veteran author...and a compulsively readible thriller at the same time... every word is a joy for the reader.' - Herald Sun
