  Lord Roll was born in Austria and came to England in 1925. After working in Whitehall, Washington and Paris, he became Permanent Under-Secretary of State in the Department of Economic Affairs, and since 1966 has been active in the City as an investment banker. His A History of Economic Thought has run to five editions, and has been in print for over 50 years.
