Media Reviews
Chapters 2 and 7, however, are Coon's true test. Research design and basic principles of conditioning/learning tend to be unpopular yet critical topics. So, the ability to keep students reading through dry and seemingly useless information is the first challenge; the second, to clearly explain some of the most confusing concepts presented in the course in the process (positive/negative correlation, classical/operant conditioning). Coon's success in so doing is the standard by which I review all new texts.
In short, I love Coon's writing style. I like the way he asks questions and then clearly answers them for the students. I feel he accomplishes this without sacrificing validity and integrity of the theories, principles, etc.
This is one of the few introductory texts that students will really read and enjoy. The question approach engages the student in an active learning process. The SQ3R method is an effective pedagogical technique.
