Theory and Practice of Counseling and Psychotherapy

Theory and Practice of Counseling and Psychotherapy

by Gerald Corey (Author)

Synopsis

This revised text aims to help students develop a personalized style of counselling. ten contemporary theories are presented and these are psychoanalytic, Adlerian, existential, person-centred, Gestalt, reality, behaviour, cognitive-behaviour, family systems, and feminist. The book demonstrates how each theory can be applied to a single hypothetical case (Stan), covers the major concepts of counselling theories, shows students how to apply those theories in practice, and helps them learn to integrate the theories into an individualized counselling style. Incorporating the thinking, feeling, and behaving dimensions of human experience, the author offers an accessible text that encourages students to compare and contrast the therapeutic models. This book is the centre of a suite of products that includes a revised student manual, a revised casebook, a new companion text, and a student video and workbook.

Media Reviews
The book is well-organized and written in a style that is easy to read and integrate. Pains were taken to make sure that material is current and reflects movement within each of the approaches. Students react favorably to the text (past edition) since they find the material easier to understand and grasp (for later recall!) than some of their texts.
Corey's book provides a consistent format for describing and critiquing the major counseling theories. The consistent structure allows students to compare and contrast theories more easily.
I applaud your attempts to work multicultural issues into each of the chapters Multicultural issues appear to provide greater relevance when dealt within the context of a specific theory, or better yet, specific culture.
