Economics and Politics in the Weimar Republic: 45 (New Studies in Economic and Social History, Series Number 45)

by TheoBalderston (Author)

Synopsis

This is a succinct overview of the turbulent economic history of the Weimar Republic. Theo Balderston, an experienced teacher of economic history, summarises the wealth of recent research on the subject, and presents it in lucid, accessible form. He offers new perspectives on the economic effects of the Reparations conflict and of domestic political struggles for postwar inflation and the slump. Controversial analyses of the slow economic growth of even the Republic's best years have implications for the instability or otherwise of its political economy. Recent globalisation and global debt crises throw new light on the foreign debt burden with which Germans saddled themselves in the later 1920s, and the fateful financial crisis of 1931. Theo Balderston explains new analyses of the role of economic policy in worsening the slump and thus paving the way for Hitler.

Media Reviews
'This book is a 'must' for anyone teaching or studying the history of the Weimar Republic, and Theo Balderston has performed a great service in writing it.' Gerald D. Feldman, H-German
'Theo Balderston has achieved a feat by summarizing the major historiographical issues of Weimar economic history in just a hundred pages ... Advanced undergraduates, graduates and scholars generally will profit from it greatly.' Roland Spickermann, H-NET
'This is a technically excellent summary of the economic literature on Weimar ... It will be highly useful as a handbook to those teaching the period ... the issues dealt with in this book were critically important to the course of world events during the twentieth century.' Robin Pearson, The Economic History Review
In this book, Theo Balderston has achieved a feat by summarizing the major historiographical issues of Weimar economic history in just a hundred pages. H-NET
Useful....Balderston demonstrates an admirable command of the relevant literature in both English and German. History
What I did appreciate is that Balderston, though not totally neutral, gives a balanced account of conflicting views. His readers are not faced with an authoritative story but are made familiar with different, often contradictory, explanations of various authors.... a very useful introduction into the turbulent economic and political events that shaped the Weimar economy.
