The Trespass of the Sign: Deconstruction, Theology and Philosophy

The Trespass of the Sign: Deconstruction, Theology and Philosophy

by KevinHart (Author)

Synopsis

Jacques Derrida's theory of deconstruction has commonly been pictured as a direct attack against philosophy and as a celebration of God's death. Yet almost as frequently, it has been criticised as a displaced negative theology, a quest for deep truth beyond all the categories of being and non-being. In this book, Kevin Hart argues that neither view is correct. Deconstruction, in Dr Hart's analysis, seeks a vantage point from which metaphysics is seen to be structured by alterity rather than identity.

Media Reviews
'A remarkably rich and deep study, which seems equally at home with Eckhart and Eco, Philo Judaeus and Friedrich Nietzche. Hart writes with elegance and lucidity, in what is essentially an ironic mode.' Terry Eagleton
'The clearest and most suggestive introduction to deconstruction for theologians. It introduces a necessary and promising discussion, and is an important work.' Theological Book Review
'What are the possibilities of religious belief - or any system of absolutes - without a metaphysics of presence? And how do you find a language for such belief? If these things interest you at all, The Trespass of the Sign is an ideal handbook and Dr Hart a lucid guide.' Age
