I really think this text is perfect for my objectives and students. I use many of the exercises in the Student Manual and require my students to work with the Manual at home. At present, I require the students to use the CD-ROM for Integrative Counseling for home use, occasionally using it in the classroom. Hence, based on my examination of the manuscript and my great satisfaction with earlier editions, I would continue to use it as a main text. It really works for me.
The section I think is most important is the Therapeutic Process, as it really demonstrates the process from the perspective of both the client and the therapist. Additionally, this aspect is unique to this text. And these sections answer students' questions about how this approach really looks and feels in the therapy room. The multicultural perspective is particularly relevant for the diverse population that Florida International University trains, as diversity issues will surely arise for future counselors working with populations we have in our area.
The biographical information that Dr. Corey provides for each theorist helps me, as a student, glean information about the character of the person writing the theory, and why certain aspects of a theory are important. In many of the chapters, the application of the theory in the case of Stan allows the student to get an idea of how the abstract parts of the theory can be played out in a real-life scenario. I also really like the multicultural perspective as it gives so much insight on how the theory will and will not work with clients that hold different cultural views than I do.
