The latest 20th Edition of Davidson's Principles & Practice of Medicine won the award for a New Edition of an Edited Textbook at the Royal Society of Medicine and Society of Authors 2007 Medical Book Awards. The award citation described the book as 'Beautifully constructed with superb clarity of style - Davidson's continues to provide for students, doctors and other health professionals a sound basis for the practice of medicine.' For over half a century Davidson has informed and educated students, doctors and other health professionals all over the world. The 20th edition of this concise yet comprehensive text lives up to its reputation for providing a rational and easily understood basis for the practice of medicine. Davidson has always linked the pathogenesis of disease with the practice of clinical medicine, serving the needs both of students, who now learn clinical medicine from the start of their course, and of more experienced readers requiring to be brought up-to-date with rapidly advancing medical sciences. The new first section on the 'Principles of Medicine' describes the fundamental mechanisms determining health and disease and includes many examples of relevant clinical problems which bring the medical sciences to life. The second section, the 'Practice of Medicine', covers practice in the medical specialties to MRCP (UK) level and has been thoroughly updated. The book's global perspective has been enhanced by the input of its International Advisory Board and distinguished new authors from outside the UK. There is now a more detailed account of health problems in the developing world. For the benefit of all readers, both SI and non-SI units are now quoted.

This book comes through where others fail...an excellent textbook; easy to read and superb value?
British Medical Journal review of the 19th edition
If you buy one textbook of medicine it has to be this one...Good evidence based and medicine of the elderly boxes and clinically relevant information, brilliant for writing up long cases/PBLs?

Few, if any, competing texts are as beautifully or extensively illustrated. Both the photographs and the line drawings are spectacular, with wonderful color reproduction and a clean, fresh look. The textbook is, quite simply, a joy to read.

The text is comprehensive and very up to date using digestible language to inform and educate the reader. The use of detailed colour diagrams and pictures also enhances the readers understanding and makes the text more manageable.
At the end of the first chapter the authors list additional resources which the reader can then search out in order to gain more information on particular topics. I found this to be an invaluable aspect of the book and also allows readers to clarify any uncertainties by accessing information from a different resource.?

In my opinion, the best new aspect about this book is its online contents...[such as] bonus content from other textbooks including Macleod's Clinical Examination and best of five self-testing questions, which allow you to test your knowledge of each chapter. I have found this invaluable for preparing for exams and they give you a very good idea about how much more revision you need to do. I would recommend Davidson's to any medical student, but especially to those in their clinical years.

I liked the approach taken in Davidson's - the detailed information explains complex ideas in a clear and easily understandable style, but in sufficient detail to give a true understanding of the material.?

The whole offering is fabulous value for money, it is a wonderful textbook and website offering and is useful for medical students and doctors wherever they are and whatever level they are studying at.
