This book has its origins in the famous bacteriology textbook by Mackie and McCartney, originally published in 1925. In the 14th edition Mackie & McCartney split into two volumes. The first (this book) is an organism-based systematic account of medical microbiology aimed at medical students. The teaching of microbiology follows different patterns in different medical schools and different regions, this book is for those schools where the subject is taught based on the infective organism, as opposed to the disease-centred approach of some schools. The book is divided into six sections, with the bulk of the text giving an organism-based systematic coverage of microbiology. Each organism is considered under a standard set of headings: description / pathogenesis / clinical features / laboratory diagnosis / treatment / epidemiology. Immunology is covered where it is of direct relevance to the understanding of microbial infection.Medical Microbiology has established itself as the premier UK-originated organism-based microbiology text. For this edition the text has been cut by 10% to sharpen its focus while new chapters look at subjects of growing importance.
The book has been fully updated to keep up with this rapidly changing subject, for example, in relation to viruses (such as HIV), antiviral drugs and immunology.
