Synopsis

The purpose of this series of books is to provide an international exchange of ideas and to explore different approaches in professional therapy practice. The books are written primarily for experienced clinicians. They are not intended as basic texts nor as reports on the most recent research, though elements of these aspects may be included. Articles written by experts from a number of different countries form the core of each volume. These are supported by a commentary on the current state of the art in the particular area of practice and an annotated bibliography of key references. The value of applying ergonomic principles to work practices is well recognized and useful texts, offering a general overview of ergonomics or specific guidelines to the practitioner, are available. However, the science of ergonomics is so broad and the disciplines which contribute to its body of knowledge so varied, that books relating to ergonomics do not always meet the special interests of individual professionals. Physiotherapists have been involved in the prevention of injury for many years, and in some countries, their contribution to the implementation of ergonomic principles has been considerable. A need was perceived to publish a book which would outline principles of ergonomic practice in areas of special interest to physiotherapists as well as to illustrate the contribution which physiotherapists can make to the growth of knowledge in this field. This volume is intended to achieve that purpose. The physiotherapist's role in the workplace is broad and includes such responsibilities as job analysis, work posture monitoring, measurement, design, education and rehabilitiation. While focusing upon prevention of physical injury, the physiotherapist's concern extends to a consideration of psychological, social and environmental factors which may influence the quality of performance of an activity. The chapters of this book address these various aspects. In addition, the results of specific research studies provide guidance for design and practice. While not intended to be a comprehensive text on ergonomics, this volume does provide background information, guidelines to practice and research results which should prove valuable to physiotherapists and others concerned for the welfare of people in the workplace.
