by Louise Petherham (Author)
A series of three books (for ages 6-7, 8-9 and 10-11) providing matched units of maths and science work. Each unit of work provides lesson plans and photocopiable pages to help the busy teacher to explain, particular key maths skills and then deliver science investigations or experiments where those maths skills are needed. The maths work samples skills from across the curriculum, guided by the National Numeracy Strategy. The science work has been chosen to complement the requirements of the QCA 'Science Scheme of Work', but also includes units relevant to the Scottish 5-14 guidelines. Maths Skills for Science for Years 1 & 2 (Scottish Primary 1-3) aims to provide parallel work for maths and science in Years 1 & 2/Scottish Primary 1-2 and 2-3. The book is organised to reflect the strands in the NNS: Number; Calculation & problem-solving; Measures; Shape and space; Recording and organising data; Handling and interpreting data. Key maths skills from the objectives for Years 1 and 2 are matched to science content needing those skills. Primarily, the QCA science units for Years 1 and 2 have been used to suggest relevant science contexts and investigations in which to use the maths. However, the other UK curriculum documents, and particularly the Scottish 5-14 Science guidelines for children working at Levels A and B, have been used to broaden the scope of the content appropriately.
