by Audrey Leathard (Author)
This is a study of the NHS putting it into the context of broader social policy developments questioning whether there was a more financially effective way of providing health care services than that which has developed. It gives an account of health care provision in England and Wales from 1900 to the 1990s and attempts to fill in and up-date the fast moving events which culminated in 1989 in the Prime Ministerial review at which point the NHS started on a pathway of radical transformation. Opening with a review of pre-war health care provision the book then puts it into a wider social policy perspective showing how and why the NHS emerged amidst the post-war Welfare State developments in Britain. Looking at the key issues which subsequently dominated the NHS during the next forty years the background to the mounting financial crisis is traced.
