The author, formerly a political journalist, held the title Assistant to the President from 1997-2001, which in effect meant that he was minister without portfolio, intellectual in residence and political strategist. He was also personal advisor to the President and First Lady. Blumenthal is therefore well-placed to tell the real story of the presidency, from the Monica Lewinsky affair (he had conversations morning to night with Bill and Hillary the day the story broke) to the relationship with Tony Blair (Blumenthal is credited with introducing the two men and helping cement the relationship).
