The Good Psychologist

The Good Psychologist

by NoamShpancer (Author)

Synopsis

The Good Psychologist has a regular 4 o'clock appointment with an exotic dancer who has lost her nerve to strip. Soon, he discovers she is even more distraught over losing access to her daughter. Meanwhile, over at the college where he teaches a class on the principles of therapy, the Good Psychologist, a measured man, warns against rushing at clients with salves and solutions. One must, he insists, preserve an optimum clinical distance, always aware that the unshakable conviction that disaster is approaching has become the real disaster in the lives of the anxious. But take a closer look at the Good Psychologist. Who is that waving to him seductively from his past? What's beckoning him to rekindle extinguished hopes for the future? As the shell of his detachment begins to crack, he finds himself pulled where the boundaries between professional and personal are dangerously blurring. With a distinctive voice of huge appeal even to those uninterested in psychology, and pulsing with humour and humanity, The Good Psychologist enters the volatile terrain of the human heart: to move or be still; to defy or to obey; to let go or hold on.

Book Overview: * A deeply human and humane novel that's a bit like HBO's series In Treatment - THE GOOD PSYCHOLOGIST was originally written in Hebrew and became a bestseller on its publication in Israel

Media Reviews
** 'This extraordinarily compelling novel combines the intensity of a thriller with the lucidity and depth of a master class. Shpancer, like all the best writers (and clinicians), doesn't just reveal the complexities of our nature but honors and preserves the mystery at their core. Page by page, THE GOOD PSYCHOLOGIST is brilliantly suspenseful; long after time is up, you'll continue to hear his voice in your head, elegant, knowing, and surpassingly humane Robert Cohen, author of INSPIRED SLEEP and AMATEUR BARBARIANS ** 'Noam Shpancer portrays the oft-hidden world of psychotherapy with unparalleled authenticity, compassion, and wit. More important, his literary gifts are profound. Beautiful language, an evocative sense of place, and an acute understanding of the human Jonathan Kellerman
