Synopsis

This is the biography of Sir John Bagot Glubb, Glubb Pasha, who was best known as the Commander of the Arab Legion, a Lawrence of Arabia figure, appointed in 1930 to pacify warring Bedouin tribespeople in Jordan, who then led them in distinguished service in Iraq and Syria. Then he was expelled by the young King Hussein in 1956 during the Suez crisis. A fascinating man - reserved, self-sufficient, proud and loyal - Glubb lived a nomad's life. Trevor Royle is a well-known writer and broadcaster on military history. His previous books include Orde Wingate, Crimea, Civil War and The Wars of the Roses. He is a columnist for the Sunday Herald, writing on international affairs and defence-related topics, and also writes scripts for the BBC. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.
