Media Reviews
The texts are deceptively simple but complement the stunning illustrations. Author and illustrator have judged what is likely to be just the right amount of detail a six- to eight-year-old needs to get a genuine sense of the lives of the creatures in their landscape. ... Print books of this quality offer a different [from multi-media] and equally valuable experience for children by telling a compelling story through words and image. * Books for Keeps *
The onomatopoeic language conjures up the prehistoric world of the books' extinct central characters .. Very informative ... Illustrations by Mike Bostock are very colourful, detailed and obviously attractive to the young reader and greatly enhance the text. * Inis *
Author Bio
A Canadian, Karen Wallace gained a degree in English from London University. Shortly afterwards she and her husband went to Toronto and worked in the publishing business. A few years later they moved to Ireland with their two young sons, and returned to England in 1982. She now writes full-time for children and for children's television. She and illustrator Mike Bostock won the TES Information Book Award for THINK OF AN EEL (Walker Books). Her novel RASPBERRIES ON THE YANGTSE was short-listed for the Guardian Award. She is married to novelist Sam Llewellyn. Mike Bostock was born in Bristol, England and studied Illustration at Bath Academy of Art between 1980-84. On graduating he worked as an editorial illustrator and also for a wide variety of design and advertising clients. His first commision to illustrate a picture book for children was THINK OF AN EEL written by Karen Wallace in 1993. This book won several awards among them the Kurt Maschler Award and the Times Education Supplement Junior Information Book Award and since then he has illustrated many picture books including IMAGINE YOU ARE A CROCODILE (1996) and IMAGINE YOU ARE A DOLPHIN (1997) for Hodder. He enjoys researching his subjects, and in particular, the opportunity drawing offers to understand, and simplify a subject and make it accessible and exciting to young readers. Drawing is exploration; it encourages you to see things with a fresh eye revealing aspects of the subject which excite you and fill you with enthusiasm to communicate and share this with the reader .
