Synopsis

Martin Reed comes to Whitefish Harbor in northern Michigan looking for a new beginning. He finds an old house and a young woman and soon, he knows he wants to spend the rest of his life there with Hannah LeClaire. But Hannah has a past - a child who never was and a lover who betrayed her trust. And when Sean Colby, the boy who broke her heart, comes back to town he cannot accept that Hannah has left him behind. Sean and his father, a local police officer, seem hell-bent on driving both Hannah and Martin out of town. And when Sean's attempts at arson and rape fail, Martin is the next victim. He wakes up in hospital to find his lover and his cousin have been arrested for attempted murder. Set against the harsh beauty of northern Michigan's Lake Superior coast, Fire Point is an unforgettable story of love, hatred and renewal by a magnificent storyteller.

Media Reviews
'Hemingway set some of his best tales in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, as has Jim Harrison. In his latest novel, John Smolens also takes advantage of the Lake Superior area to great effect and Smolens has done a superlative job of rendering a place and its people realistically. He has crafted a thriller that is as literate and insightful into human nature as any novel out this year.' Denver Post on Fire Point 'Does envy end the soul in fire or in ice? I had always argued for envy's soul-freezing qualities, how it can paralyze a life by encasing a heart in ice. But a new, elegantly structured suspense novel from John Smolens, Fire Point, argues for the heated view, where envy can immolate someone from the inside out -- and then storm out to burn down everything in its path. Fire Point is a good, suspenseful read with the kind of lean writing that many better-selling writers would have to sell their souls to achieve. Detroit Free Press 'In the hands of others, this story line would feel trite and overused, but not in Smolens' hands. Hannah LeClaire, new love Martin Reed and old flame Sean Colby are all too human: victims of past mistakes, beholden to choices they had no power to make, and amazingly, redeemed in surprising and unexpected ways ... Smolens' careful realization of his characters and the harsh Upper Michigan setting adds a welcome freshness that rises above the apparent plot contrivances.' Baltimore Sun on Fire Point 'Smolens proves especially adept at illustrating the tenuous alliances and small fissures that form between townies when the tourists have all gone home. In a quiet, assured fashion, he sets up a series of inevitable confrontations that don't usually turn out the way one would expect -- just like in real life. Fans of Tim O'Brien's In the Lake of the Woods will find much to like here.' Booklist on Fire Point 'A mesmerising danse macabre.' Sunday Express on COLD 'Beautifully written and absorbing.' Sunday Telegraph on THE INVISIBLE WORLD 'Smolens' superior thriller is utterly absorbing.' The Times on THE INVISIBLE WORLD 'A perfecty-paced thriller that gently pulls you in.' Sunday Mirror on THE INVISIBLE WORLD 'A poignant and literate thriller' Guardian on The Invisible World 'Small problems in small towns have a habit of blowing up out of all proportion, which is exactly what happens in this book, and Smolens chronicles them with chilling inevitability.' Independent on Sunday on FIRE POINT 20041109 'Smolens is especially deft at capturing the rhythms of small-town life and the complexity of his ordinary people. Incisive portraits of town denizens add texture.' Kirkus Review on FIRE POINT 20041109
