Synopsis

Ben is looking forward to staying with his Uncle Michael in the Scottish Highlands. He's keen to help Michael restore the old boat Sea Hawk - and Michael has promised to teach him to sail. But there's something strange about the boat, and the atmosphere in the local village is mysteriously dark. Then the dreams start - terrifying visions of a body, floating in water, a body Ben recognises, but can't reach. A sense of fear and darkness begins to pervade his days, too, and when his new friend, Iona disappears, Ben fears the worst. It is not until he trusts his dreams that he finds her, almost drowned ...and the truth of Sea Hawk's history begins to be revealed. The village, it seems, has long been haunted by a terrible accident that happened long ago ...This book presents a powerful story of loyalty and betrayal, guilt and redemption, courage and cowardice - mysterious and gripping to the end.

Media Reviews
This was a really exciting read - I know the highlands of Scotland well, and here they are portrayed realistically and beautifully. The plot is tightly written and swift-moving, and the building atmosphere breaks at just the right moment to be resolved perfectly, leaving just enough loose ends. This book is not helped much by either its blurb - which is slightly dull - or its disjointed, diffused cover. But inside - what a book! I really believed in the characters, and almost lived the story - I couldn't stop reading this till I had reached the very last page, and even then, I wanted more. Amazing! AMAZON.CO.UK reader review

THE KEEPER OF THE GATE
'Beverley Birch excels at suggesting the many levels at which things go on in a family, and the children's ability to keep several preoccupations, inner and outer, serious and trivial, active at the same time.'
