Synopsis

The first five editions of this internationally established textbook, translated into seven languages, were written by Joan F. Zilva and Peter R. Pannall. Philip D. Mayne joined them in the fifth and produced this sixth edition. The book, although used by many postgraduates, continues to be aimed primarily at medical students and continues to emphasise the clinical relevance of the subject, based on practical experience. It encourages a critical approach based on an understanding of the underlaying physiology. With this, and the safety of the patient in mind, the investigation sections accompanying many of the chapters outline a step-by-step approach to the use of the chemical pathology laboratory. A companion workbook containing multiple-choice questions, data interpretation exercises and illustrative case histories is also available.
