Synopsis

This novel is set in New York in 1878 where Noel Tremont, the daughter of a wealthy family, lives in Stuyvesant Square. She falls in love with Englishman Ned Fitch, but their love becomes blighted and entangled with the mysterious death of Carrie Rendall, a woman abortionist ; and besides, Noel has a secret that would cause enormous scandal at a time when society's attitude towards women was at its most hypocritical. Margaret Lewerth is also author of a cycle of four books entitled The Roundtree Women .
