Investigating Gender: Contemporary Perspectives in Education

by Christine Skelton (Author), Becky Francis (Author)

Synopsis

This is an excellent account of the dilemmas and opportunities facing contemporary theories of gender and education. The book brings together some of the most sophisticated researchers in the field to demonstrate the power, the mysteries and the complexities of the concept of identity. The case for a new approach to gender theory is convincing and exciting. Teachers, academics and policy makers need to recognise the value of such contemporary concerns.
- Madeleine Arnot, University of Cambridge.

Investigating Gender maps the contemporary and developing theoretical debates in the field of gender and education, and provides an overview of the diverse areas of research within gender and education.

Contributions have been commissioned from recognised experts in the field in order to provide a comprehensive reader on gender and education for undergraduate students. The book will also provide stimulating reading for postgraduate students and academics.

Recent changes, developments and challenges in the field are outlined in the first section of the book. It also catalogues the influence of research in this area on policy in the UK context. The second section focuses on recent innovations in theoretical debates in gender and education. Overviews of research developments in particular subject areas (such as sexuality, social class, masculinity etc) are provided in the third section, where contributors draw on their own research findings to illustrate the discussion.
