Do Muslim girls have access to equal educational opportunities in British schools? To what extent do issues of race and gender affect the education of Muslim girls? This important book examines the relationships between teachers (often white and non-Muslim) and their female Muslim students in two single sex schools - one an urban comprehensive, the other a private Muslim school - and explores the ways in which these relationships are affected by different educational settings and experiences. The tensions between the twin priorities of equality and difference which shape feminist discourses in education are carefully analysed. The book begins by developing a theoretical framework which reflects current debates within feminism and post-structuralism in a coherent and accessible way to enable readers coming to these debates for the first time to develop a basic understanding. At the same time the book will serve to challenge the reader and can be seen as a springboard for those who wish to explore these theoretical debates further. The book will be of interest to students and academics in the fields of women's studies, education, research methods and social studies.
