Race and Community Care (Race, Health & Social Care)

Race and Community Care (Race, Health & Social Care)

by W.I.U.Ahmad (Editor), KarlAtkin (Editor)

Synopsis

This book is the first critical introduction to the area of 'race' and community care and thus fills an important gap in existing literature. The first part of the book considers the racialised constructions of community and provides a historical account of the relationship between state welfare and minority ethnic communities. Part two focuses on the nature of family obligations and the processes of social change. Part three provides case studies in 'race' and community care by focusing on disability, mental health, cash for care and the role of the voluntary sector. The book is essential reading for students and teachers in a broad range of courses in community care, social policy, race relations and social work. It will also be of use to practitioners, policy makers and researchers in health and social care.

Media Reviews
...offers insight and analysis which can usefully and rightfully inform the work of those at the coal-face of health and social services delivery...Recommended reading for purchasers and providers who wish to move beyond stereo-types and assumptions to address the community care needs of their black client populations. - Health Service Journal ...this book will be of interest to policy makers and practitioners. But the target audience...is students and teachers on courses in community care, social work, and social policy and it is for them that the book will prove to be most useful. - Community Care ...an important text for clinical practitioners and policy makers who have an interest in'race', health and community care. It is an essential text for students. - Journal of Community Nursing This book is a good introduction to the subject and is another fine example of an Open University Press textbook. - Health Matters ...the complexities of anti-racist practise are rarely explored and addressed as authoritatively as here...It is written inan accessiblestyle and the multi-disciplinary approach achieves a successful synthesis of theory and practice. - British Journalof Social Work ...the contributors to this volume are to be complimented for opening up a rich and complex area for debate. We all have much to learn from them and to contribute to that debate. - Journal of Interprofessional Care
