Student Experience (Society for Research into Higher Education)

Student Experience (Society for Research into Higher Education)

by SusanneHaselgrove (Editor)

Synopsis

This book focuses on higher education from the student perspective. In particular, it examines the change in the UK (and other countries) from an elite model towards the USA model of mass higher education, and how this is reflected in student experience. Higher education courses are increasingly diverse in content, delivery and location; the student population itself has become more diverse; financial support and employment opportunities have changed; and customer care and a market focus are to the fore. What are the implications for students, and how far have universities adjusted to their new constituents? This book tackles these issues. It approaches student-experience chronologically, so is divided into sections on pre-entry, 'on-course', and on the period of transition to the next stage of their lives. By exploring a wide range of contexts, it is a valuable reflection of the overall pattern of student experience.

Media Reviews
This is a fascinating book and, as well as living up to its title, it gives a multifaceted portrait of the state of higher education in the mid-1990s. It will be of considerable interest both to practitioners in universities and to managers and policy makers. - Assessment and Evaluation in Higher Education ...this book remains a useful introduction to the range of areas that comprise higher education, and the impact upon it of current political thinking. - Youth & Policy For anyone looking for a thorough and detailed overview of the dramatic changes currently overtaking higher education, as experienced by students themselves, this volume could hardly be bettered. - Studies in Higher Education ...an interesting and timely book which presents a wide range of studies of students in higher education and illustrates the diversity and complexity of that experience. - Journal of Vocational Education and Training
