Directions In Staff Development (UK Higher Education OUP Humanities & Social Sciences Higher Education OUP)

by Angela Brew (Editor), Angela Brew (Editor)

Synopsis

While universities have been concerned about educating their students, traditionally they have tended to neglect the development of their staff. This is now changing, and this book charts the directions that have been taken and the possibilities for the future.

Staff development is now recognized as one of the most significant vehicles for change in higher education. It has moved from the periphery to the centre, and is a key feature in all strategic planning. This book suggests why staff development is important now and shows how it contributes to the development both of institutions and of staff as individuals. Angela Brew and the contributors examine the current state of the art of staff development, and place it in the context of other developments in higher education. They explore what constitutes good practice, address new forms of practice, delineate the problems and opportunities, and clearly present the key challenges for staff development in the future.

Media Reviews
Angela Brew and her contributors have taken their readers, as well as staff development, a quantum leap beyond the situation which existed only a few years ago. They have a different story to tell - and how well they tell it. The editor is to be congratulated on producing a text which reads usefully as a sequence of well planned and linked chapters, whose varied authorship is almost unnoticeable as the theme is developed and expanded with comprehensive coverage and a pleasant absence of duplication. Above all, I rejoiced to find that staff development has now become a professional activity. These writers have contributed chapters which are well referenced, whose references are not resticeted to articles internal to the author's institution. They refer to, and use, theory which has been derived from research, practice and thorough investigation - and which has then been tested out in other situations. Buy it; read it; return to it; and expect to find it a very valuable resource. - Higher Education ...aband of rigorous and ambitious enthusiasts have been working...to lift staff development standards by their bootstraps. Many of these enthusiasts are contributors to this volume; and the papers here assembled demonstrate the extent of their success. I rate this a truly admirablecollection of papers - most of all because it takes staff developmentforward by an appreciable leap...The final text is well written, a rich resource, rigorous in its thinking, practical and relevant in its philosophy and its advice and a purchase to be commended to anyone withan involvement in staff development - The Journal of Open and Distance Learning I rate this truly admirable collection of papers - most of all because it takes staff development forward by an appreciable leap. But it has other virtues. The editor has carefully articulated the contributions so that they form a coherent whole; and she has carefully planned the range of topics to provide thorough coverage of all the aspects of staff development which came to mymind and a few more besides. - Open Learning This book fills, what has been a long-standing gap, the lack of a reasonably comprehensive, up-to-date picture of staff development in higher education. Anyone interested in finding out about the recent history and rapid growth of staff development will find this book a must...I would recommend this book for its thoroughness of discussion of theissues it raises, in what is a highly complex, heterogeneous and fastchanging field. - Assessment & Education ...makes an important statement for the place of the staff developer in the changing environment of higher education. - Journal of Vocational Education and Training ...makesa useful generic contribution to the nature of a learning organization, based upon cases that clearly reflect some profound experience, anddeserves attention beyond higher education. - Management Learning ...much to commend itself to managers in universities. The main strengths of the book lie in its relatively comprehensive coverage of current staff development (SD) practices and issues. - Managing HE
