by JoeKane (Author)

Synopsis

This is a firsthand account of a small band of Amazonian warriors and their battle to preserve their way of life from the scourge of civilization. Joe Kane, author of Running the Amazon , returns to the river to search for the Huaorani, a nation of 1300 nomadic warriors so remote that their language is unrelated to any other on Earth; so fierce that for millenia all comers have been turned away from their land, a territory in the middle of the Ecuadorian Amazon the size of Massachusetts, USA. In the 1990s, the Huaorani are besieged by oil companies, missionaries, indigenous bureacrats and envionmentalists intent on helping them better themselves. This is an account of the efforts of the Huaorani to vault from the Stone Age to the Petroleum Age .

Author Bio
Joe Kane is an American author of two books and a journalist who writes for numerous publications such the New Yorker, National Geographic and Esquire. Kane is best known for his book Running the Amazon, a firsthand account of the only expedition ever to travel the entire 4,200-mile Amazon River from its source in Peru to the Atlantic Ocean, which took place between August 1985 and February 1986. The book is widely considered a classic of adventure literature. In 1991, Kane traveled to Ecuador to learn about the Huaorani Indians and their struggles with international oil companies who were exploiting the Amazon with poor environmental practices such as setting off explosive charges, building new roads and oil rigs, and causing oil spills. Based on his experiences there he wrote Savages.
