Christmas Truce - The Western Front, December 1914

by Malcolm Brown (Author), Malcolm Brown (Author), Shirley Seaton (Author)

Synopsis

At Christmas 1914, British and German soldiers sang carols to each other and openly fraternized in No Man's Land. They exchanged souvenirs, took photographs, and some freely admitted that they had no wish to amke war. The authors offer new insight into the extent of this truce. The truce between the trenches extended over at least two-thirds of the British line and there were similiar cease fires in the French and Belgian sectors. In some areas the peaceable mood lingered well into 1915. Malcolm Brown and Shirley Seaton have combed war diaries, talked to participants and consulted a wide range of contemporary letters, diaries and journals to produce this account. This edition is published at the eightieth anniversary of the original event. Since the book first appeared in 1984, new evidence has enriched the story.
