Before the devastation of the Vietnam War, much of the charm and grandeur of the ancient native civilizations had survived. In Golden Earth , Lewis travels to Burma, where he fell in love with the land and its people. Although much of the countryside was under the control of insurgent armies, he managed - by steamboat, decrepit lorry and Dacoit-besieged train - to travel almost everywhere he wanted and to see brilliant spectacles, still out of our reach. In A Goddess in the Stones , Lewis undertakes a journey of 2500 miles in search of the old India described by early travellers, in the belief that it remained undiscovered.
