by StanleyWilliams (Author)

Synopsis

The true-life adventure story of one of the world's leading volcano experts. In 1993, Stanley Williams was investigating Galeras, what he thought was a dormant volcano in Colombia. But it blew, killing nine members of his expedition; against all odds Williams survived. This book is both the scientific story of how human beings have tried to tame these pipelines to the centre of the earth and the terrifying tale of what it is like to be caught up in a volcanic explosion.

Media Reviews
Most sensible people who found themselves nearly losing a leg and almost being incinerated in the course of their daily work would start to scan the sits vac columns for a change of career. Not volcanologist Stanley Williams. In 1993, he found himself atop a Colombian volcano called Galeras as it erupted unexpectedly, killing several of his colleagues - his survival being equally, if not more, unexpected. Instead of jacking the job in, he turned to thinking about what motivates volcanologists to undertake the hazardous work that they do, unravelling the mysteries of volcanoes in an attempt to make places like Tokyo, Jakarta and Mexico City safer places to live. This absorbing book is the result of his research. Covering the cultural and physical impact of volcanoes from Vesuvius' eruption in AD79 to the present day, Williams works back from his own life-endangering experiences to examine the volatile mounds themselves and the people who work with them.
