Culture and Customs of Jordan (Culture and Customs of the Middle East) (Cultures and Customs of the World)

by JohnA.Shoup (Author)

Synopsis

After a solid overview of the land, people, and history in Chapter 1, Chapter 2 covers religion. Jordan is still a conservative Muslim state, with a Sunni Muslim majority, that retains good relations with its citizens of other faiths. The discussion of literature and media in Chapter 3 emphasizes the pan-Arabic tradition. In Chapter 4, architecture, art, and traditional crafts in Jordan are shown to be linked to the history of the country and its religious and ethnic diversity. In Chapter 5, the cuisine and culture reveal inspiration from the region of Greater Syria. In the Gender, Marriage, and Family chapter, Shoup looks at the conservative and powerful family and changing women's roles. Highlighted in the Social Customs chapter are the topics of honor, shame, and respect, social clubs, and more on women's roles in the middle class. A final chapter on Music and Dance covers everything from their Bedouin roots to Arab rap.

Book Overview: Jordan, called the land of welcome, has been an oasis of peace and stability in a strife-filled region. This volume offers invaluable and broad insight into a front-line Arab nation today. The Bedouin, Islamic, and Arab influences are shown to permeate Jordanian society. Students and general readers will learn about the changes since independence in 1946, with a strong monarchy and economy and a well-educated public.

Media Reviews
Shoup has done a fine job of surveying Jordan for this series, which is directed at the general reader and the undergraduate student. Jordan's geography, history, religion, literature, arts, traditional food and costume, gender, and social customs are the main themes described. Attention is given throughout to the Bedouin people as well as the Arab majority. Differences between the culture and customs of city, village, and rural people are carefully noted. A glossary and bibliography are provided. - Reference & Research Book News
