Book Overview: This is one of the most important and absorbing memoirs of the Second World War ever to see print. As supreme commander of the German Navy, Doenitz was responsible for the creation of the infamous U-boat 'wolf packs' which almost brought Britain to her knees. With a view of the war from the very highest level, he provides here a panorama of the way the war was run from the German side. But it is the last part of the book that is perhaps the most fascinating. With the suicide of Hitler, it was Doenitz who took over the reins as Fuhrer, as the German military machine crumbled around him. His description of the apocalyptic last days of the Third Reich make powerful, often moving, reading.

Author Bio
Karl Doenitz was commissioned into the Imperial German Navy in 1910 and served on U-boats during the First World War. He became convinced of the war-winning potential of U-boats and masterfully conducted a battle for the Atlantic which the Allies only just won. He succeeded Grand Admiral Raeder as C-in-C of the Germany Navy. He became the last Fuhrer of Germany after Hitler's suicide in May 1945.
