Comfort To The Enemy

Comfort To The Enemy

by ElmoreLeonard (Author)

Synopsis

This is a dazzling collection of three Elmore Leonard stories of which the third and title story, 'Comfort to the Enemy' is a novella. The stories chart the beginning, middle and mature years of legendary lawman Carl Webster's career. The title story begins with the investigation of a murder at a German POW camp in Oklahoma. The bank robbers of the 1920s are gone. Carl has married Louly, who has joined the Marines, and he has also done a tour of duty. Oklahoma is full of POW camps with crewmen and grenadiers from the Afrika Krops. Jurgen Schrenk is a young captain who escapes with some frequency, a man well-liked by many of the native Oklahomans. He's fallen in love with a girl by the name of Shemane, a sexy beauty and gangster's moll who lives at home with her mother. Jurgen makes a successful escape with the help of Shemane, and Carl promises he'll help the lovers at the end of the war. But Jurgen may be a spy, and Carl may have to pursue him to Detroit, a place where Jurgen has lived and where arms are being manufactured. With excellent dialogue, grippingly credible characters, and the glamour of sex and bad reputation, Comfort to the Enemy shows Elmore Leonard at the very top of his game.

Media Reviews
an excellent read. The zing of Leonard's prose, the ease with which his characters come to life and the moral questions raised by the 1940s setting... are concrete evidence of a master crime writer still at the top of his game. -- RUSSEL MCLEAN, author of The Good Son WATERSTONES BOOKS QUARTERLY 10.04.09 Elmore Leonard has been my favourite crime novelist for a long time. A little violence, a little humour and some sexual innuendo makes for an enjoyable page-turner. -- PATRICK QUINLAN WATERSTONES BOOKS QUARTERLY 10.04.09 an enjoyable immersion in a Bonnie and Clyde world of celebrity criminals, plucky lawmen and sassy women. -- JOHN DUGDALE SUNDAY TIMES - 7.06.09 American crime fiction rules, and Elmore Leonard is the don... With books that inspired Tarantino to get the camera out, Leonard now releases his 37th efford. Comfort to the Enemy is a collection of three short stories that start in a POW camp, written in a modern style and expertly driven street jive. LOADED - 1.08.09 pretty delicious... revel in the writing. Leonard may be frequently to as the Dickens of Detroit but he is more like Jane Austen in his ability to sum up a whole character in a sentence... This book has more than its share of dialogue to die for. THE DAILY TELEGRAPH - 6.06.09 The excitment comes from the zinging dialogue and characters, who are as colourful as the cover of a work of pulp fiction Three Stars WALES ON SUNDAY - 03.05.09 a slow-burning and understated crime story. 7/10 IRISH NEWS - 02.05.09
