Wild Geese

Wild Geese

by Lara Harte (Author)

Synopsis

Fanny Burney meets Maria Edgeworth in an atmospheric and enchanting novel, set on the eve of the French Revolution. Isabella, a headstrong but intelligent Irish girl flees Dublin and an unwanted marriage to join her estranged father in Paris (where many ex-pat Irish have sheltered following penal restrictions in Ireland). Isabella is a classic innocent abroad - a pre-feminist heroine with a mind of her own. When she arrives in Paris she finds her father's beautiful and accomplished but penniless Irish cousins, mother and daughter, already in situ. Also in Paris is the handsome young Irish doctor with whom Isabella is in love and in whose way she was thrown during her flight from Dublin. The idealistic Isabella quickly discovers that there is more to her mysterious father than she thought. She also discovers, to her growing horror, the true origin of her family's recently-acquired fortune. Love, social reform and slavery mingle in this dazzling and intelligent tour de force.

Book Overview: 23,000 copies sold of her debut novel, FIRST TIME Praise for FIRST TIME '(the) first person narrative provides a wonderful insider view of adolescent loneliness and angst against a backdrop of Dublin streetlife. Harte has got it absolutely right. It's raw, slightly grubby, and spectacularly well observed.' Midweek Magazine '...an exceptionally truthful and fluent first novel.' Independent on Sunday Praise for LOSING IT 'Harte writes with stunning conviction' The Times 'LOSING IT is an assured and confident work; Lara Harte has the gift of being able to describe emotional states with economy. The novel is authentic and enthralling.' TLS

Media Reviews
Finished copies of WILD GEESE have all gone out. Lara has completed a full page interview with WRITING MAGAZINE (April 2003) and has also been interviewed by the IRISH POST. In Ireland Lara has been interviewed for the SUNDAY INDEPENDENT and by Sue Leonard for the IRISH EXAMINER. The Irish edition of the SUNDAY TIMES have also interviewed Lara, and this ran in the Culture section on 16th February. An interview with Rattlebag is still tbc. We had a great bookshop launch for Lara (10th February) in Waterstones, Dublin. There was a good turn out and Lara signed lots of books. 'This story...moves at a rollicking, good-natured pace.'IMAGE Magazine 'WILD GEESE...moves Harte in a serious new direction, while indicating that a general interest in history can be encouraged by the attempt to organically incorporate the actual past with the lives of well-constructed virtual people.'IRISH TIMES 'WILD GEESE shows her [LaraHarte] maturing into a writer of powerful historical fiction...[It] marks a radical departure for Harte, from the local present into the internatiohnal past. She carries it off with style...She has found a way of working genuine substance into a popular medium and making it seem effortless.'Gerry McCarthy,SUNDAY TIMES (Ireland) '[Harte] is an assured storyteller...the underlying promise of adventure keeps the pages turning...WILD GEESE is also a very political novel, but its author succeeds in moving seamlessly from the political to the personal. She skillfully weaves serious questions - slavery, social injustice, Catholic emancipation - into a narrative driven by the machinations of two women (Isabella's scheming cousins) who are jockeying for fortune and position.'Clodagh Finn, SUNDAY INDEPENDENT 'Most impressive here is the quality of the research...this book makes fascinating reading.'Rachel Andrews, SUNDAY TRIBUNE (Dublin) 'WILD GEESE is a worthwhile history lesson as well as an enjoyable tale of two cities...Harte has found her wings.'Siobhan Cronin, IRISH INDEPENDENT 'A sweeping tale of romance and political intrigue...WILD GEESE succeeds largely through its authenticity; from the characters' formal speech patterns to the geographical descriptions, everything abou ti trings true.'Andrew Lynch, IN DUBLIN 'With an appealing, feisty heroine and interesting insights into the constraints imposed by 18th-century society, this makes for entertaining reading.'GOOD BOOK GUIDE 'I will look forward ot reading the sequel if there is one. Lara Harte could easily become a familiar name to us allas a writer of romantic historical fiction. She has a fluid style, interesting characters and managed to create a balance between romance, plot and historical background which even very experienced historical novelists find it hard to achieve.'Myfanwy Cook, HISTORIAL NOVELS REVIEW 'I admired the research...The passion for the history from which the writer conjured her characters was apparant.'New Books.mag There has also been a review in FAST FORWARD and we'
