Prepare for Exile: A New Spirituality and Mission for the Church

Prepare for Exile: A New Spirituality and Mission for the Church

by PatrickWhitworth (Author)

Synopsis

The Church today must throw off old attitudes, renew its spirituality and refocus its mission, if it is to flourish as it enters a new period of exile. Preparing for exile and living in it means learning from those who were 'exiles' in their own day - men and women who challenged the Church to reshape itself, to remain fresh and engaging. Exiles from the Bible and from all traditions of the Church are recalled: Benedict, who formed the Western monastic tradition; Catholic mystics, such as Teresa of Avila and John of the Cross, who encouraged a new spirituality; and, Luther, Pascal and Wesley who challenged the religious hegemonies of their day. While drawing strength from past experiences of exile, Patrick Whitworth considers new ways of doing mission and how to revitalize our attitudes and spirituality. Prepare for Exile will encourage and inspire all those who want to know how we can truly 'sing the Lord's song in a foreign land'.

Media Reviews
'Prepare for Exile offers an engaging and readable overview of the history of the Church, focusing particularly on those periods when to be Christian has meant to live at odds with the values of society. Patrick Whitworth writes, as ever, with experience and wisdom - this is a realistic and encouraging contribution to the discussion on the challenges facing the Church.' Rev'd Dr Alison Morgan, author of The Wild Gospel
