Author Bio
J R Watson is Emeritus Professor of English, University of Durham, where he taught for 21 years. He is interested in the whole relationship between religion and literature, and in the communication of the sacred. His book on Wordsworth, Wordsworth's Vital Soul (1982) deals in part with this. In recent years he has concentrated on hymnology: The English Hymn (Oxford, Clarendon Press, 1997) was followed by An Annotated Anthology of Hymns (Oxford University Press, 2002, paperback 2003). Dick Watson is currently general editor for a projected replacement for John Julian's Dictionary of Hymnology (1892, 1907), a task which killed off several people who attempted it in the twentieth century.
