Clinical Leadership: From A to Z

This book makes the reader question their behaviour and management style. Good leadership is about enabling our staff to develop and flourish and this book gives us guidance on how to do this in an easy to follow format I really enjoyed this book and am sure that I will bring it out on many occasions when faced with leadership issues which will hopefully make me a more effective manager and get me good feedback from my team.

Nursing and Midwifery Council chief executive and registrar Dickon Weir-Hughes emphasises the need to be real and authentic in your leadership role, while being true to yourself and your values. He argues that this makes for trusted and respected leadership.

He discusses authenticity, truth, values, being real and honest and how these are perceived. This stimulates many 'thinking points', which are highlighted at the end of each alphabetic chapter. Although there are a number of the usual leadership concepts, such as listening, strategy and goals, there are enough surprises to warrant close reading. These include discussion of humanity, excitement, unethical leadership and organisational memory. There is further reading on many of the areas he covers.

Professor Weir-Hughes provides advice at the beginning of the book on how it could be used, with a great deal of emphasis on reflection and reflective practice. This guide would be useful for all leaders, not only those in the health service.

A useful, supportive guide to leadership across all health care professionals and clinicians, this book is good to use 'as and when you need it' for those who are interested in some of the theory and concepts surrounding leadership and management.

Each chapter opens with a powerful quote relevant to the topic which is discussed in the chapter. The chapters are succinct and straight-to-the point whilst paying attention to certain details. Features include 'Taking Forward' sections at the end of each chapter which aid the reader to implement what has been read and focus on a more practical way to improve leadership and management skills.
