The purpose of this training guide is to help the student to become familiar with the world's most commonly used disk operating system for personal computers, MS-DOS or DOS for short. Although this operating system will finally be superseded by others such as OS/2, the number of computers in which it is installed is now so large that the majority of personal computer users are likely to meet it for many years to come. While it is possible to isolate users from MS-DOS, it has been found that familiarity with the basic DOS commands gives people the confidence to deal effectively with the day-to-day running of their computers and even more importantly, to sort out some of the problems associated with file and disk management. It is especially true that those who are taking courses in computer studies at GCSE, A level or BTEC will gain valuable insights into the workings of computers by having a thorough familiarization with the operating system.
