H. G. Wells (1866-1946) wrote The Time Machine in 1895, initiating an extraordinary career as a novelist, short-story writer, historian and commentator. All his major works are published by Penguin. Matthew Beaumont is Senior Lecturer in English at University College London. His most recent book is Nightwalking: A Nocturnal History of London, Chaucer to Dickens (2015)
