by JeremySutton (Author)

Synopsis

Painter IX Creativity is a comprehensive creative guide to Corel's Painter IX Software. It explains the basics of setting up, understanding, customizing, and applying Painter to create original works, paintings, generating painterly animations, manipulating and transforming photographic images, and constructing evocative photo-collage. The projects include advanced techniques and creative strategies.

The book gives visual artists-digital designers, multimedia artists, photographers, illustrators, animators, and graphic artists-the explanations they need in order to maximize the sophisticated, creative Painter tool. The book teaches the artist how to transfer traditional art skills and techniques to the computer. It teaches the animator how to add painterly effects to their work, whether for video, TV, or the web. IT explains how photographers can transform and collage their images with natural-media tools. For Adobe Photoshop users, this book explains the expanded creative potential Painter lends to their work.

The author takes a knowledgeable and straightforward approach to this step-by-step project-based book, explaining how each tool is used, every effect achieved, and every topic thoroughly described. The book allows readers to build upon their knowledge so that beginners have the chance to become advanced users, and advanced users have an opportunity to hone their skills and adopt new techniques.

Media Reviews
...It is a must have .. In my opinion, Jeremy Sutton is THE expert of this wonderful program and this, his latest book, is a joy to have in my library.

..He places the step-by-step learning process within a larger context, in which Painter becomes a medium that taps into self-dsicovery and releases the creative juices within us in fun, expressive ways.

If you haven't seen Jeremy's new Painter IX book yet, you are in for a treat. Jeremy, what an incredible piece of work the book is for us Painter Addicts! It's so complete and covers about everything. The extra brushes are great and I already have my favorites and am enjoying playing with them...Thank you for sharing yourself and your talent.

One of the best Painter books ...if not the best! I've used Painter since version 4 and am familiar with the evolution of this amazing program and have purchased many Painter books during this time. Jeremy's book provides not only excellent technical
instruction (which is meticulously well-organized and well-written) but more importantly for me, excellent art instruction (foundations of drawing and painting are well integrated with the Painter techniques).
- Dorothy Yamamoto, Graphic Designer and 8 year Painter User

This book is worth every penny and more, even without the CD (even though I use the brushes on the CD without any problems, by the way). This is a superb book: highly illuminating and very inspiring. I have virtually all the books on Painter (including those for earlier software versions) and this one is in a league of its own. You simply cannot read this book without learning a huge amount and being tremendously inspired by the content and projects. Very intelligently conceived and written book, obviously benefiting from Sutton's teaching experience.
- Sattar Khan, 8 year Painter User

Sutton takes quite an artistic approach (he is a painter) but provides a sound basis on the use of his muck up technique in which he places a swath of loose colour as an under-painting for eventual refinement. He makes the very valid point that this overcomes the natural reluctance of people to start the creative process off - a sort of writer's block.

If you need advice on painting for real, as a way to understand Corel Painter, then Barclay Sheaks' book is well recommended.
