Day of Atonement

Day of Atonement

by A . Alvarez (Author)

Synopsis

A. Alvarez is a poet, critic, and author of books on subjects ranging from suicide to gambling, from divorce to North Sea oil. This is his third novel and it is a book in which all his various talents and interests coalesce. Set in London, it explores the relationship between Joe Constantine, his wife Judy, and Tommy Apple, fixer, womanizer, wheeler-dealer and bets of friends. When Tommy dies suddenly in suspicious circumstances Joe and Judy are drawn, fascinated, into the dangerous underworld of his life. The story, one of duplicity, intrigue, and venality, is told from the opposing viewpoints of husband and wife. Day of Atonement is about marriage and friendship, Jews and Gentiles, seduction and betrayal. Above all, it is about temptation. This is a wonderfully mature novel, at once witty and sombre, by a distinguished writer.
