Physical Chemistry

Physical Chemistry

by P.W.Atkins (Author)

Synopsis

This best selling text has now been revised and updated, taking into account the comments of users throughout the world. Whilst the structure of previous editions has been largely retained, many sections have been extensively rewritten, and much of the material has been reorganised to provide an up-to-date account of physical chemistry. The revision has led to improvements in the text, including strengthening of the sections on thermodynamics, chemical equilibria, molecular structure, statistical thermodynamics, diffusion and surfaces. Reaction kinetics receives much coverage, and a new treatment of electrochemistry is enhanced by a simplified presentation of equations. The material on spectroscopy has been revised and updated: major new sections cover Fourier transform techniques and lasers, and a rewritten chapter on resonance techniques emphasises Fourier transform NMR. Problems and examples have been reviewed and revised: more introductory problems - now called exercises - are included, and examples that emphasise problem-solving strategies replace the purely numerical type. An extended and revised data section is provided at the end of the book. In this new edition, more sub-headings have been introduced, equations are displayed more clearly and the language used is simpler and more direct. At the same time, a rigorous approach to the subject has been maintained. An ELBS/LPBB edition is available.
