Esposito's intention is to present Islam as the living, viable, alternative world view that it has been, and continues to be, for a large segment of the world's population. Incorporating the insiders' as well as the outsiders' viewpoint, the book will not simply describe Muslim beliefs, practices, attitudes, and values, but will bring them alive for the reader through quotations from original sources such as the Quran and traditions of Muhammad.
