Tess of the D'Urbervilles (Oxford World's Classics)

Tess of the D'Urbervilles (Oxford World's Classics)

by Thomas Hardy (Author), Simon Gatrell (Editor), Juliet Grindle (Editor)

Synopsis

The classic tale of Tess Durbeyfield, wronged by two men and driven to vengeful murder, shows Hardy at his most fatalistic. Hardy felt that this was the finest of his novels, and that Tess was the most deeply felt character he ever created. Certainly, it has remained high on most people's list of favourite Victorian novels.

Another good edition in this series--the notes seem to be more extensive and more helpful than those in Penguin. --John Wilson, Dakota Wesleyan University
Oxford World's Classics are my favorite editions of novels, both for my own work and in the classroom. The texts are reliable and sound; the apparatus, helpful and instructive; and the introductions are provocative and informed. Thank you for a wonderful series! --Laura Dabundo, Kennesaw State
