This anthology of quotations is a selection of reflections about each year of life by a wide range of authors, including American and Continental writers, though without trying to do justice to Oriental concepts of ageing and wisdom which reflect a different philosophical perspective. The quotations have been chosen with the aim to balance pessimism and optimism, average and exeptional achievements and late and premature ageing. From the age of eighty upwards, the material is obviously more restricted and concentrates on exceptional old people such as Bernard Berenson or Bernard Shaw. The quotations are taken from diaries, letters, biographies and autobiographies from contributors such as Cicero, Ogden Nash, Mozart, Picasso, Goethe, Churchill, Charlotte Bronte and Gertrude Stein.
