  John Atkinson arrived in the remote parish of Danby in North Yorkshire in 1850 and was to remain on the moors until his death fifty years later. A keen archaeologist and local historian, he found particular pleasure in recounting the ancient folklore of the Dales with its unique superstitions and customs.
