Author Bio

H. C. G. Matthew is Professor of Modern History in the University of Oxford. Since 1992 he has been editing the New Dictionary of National Biography which will replace the present one. His writings on Gladstone, now brought together in Gladstone 1809-1898 (1997), won the 1995 Wolfson Prize for History.
