The Young Oxford Book of Nightmares

The Young Oxford Book of Nightmares

by Dennis Pepper (Editor)

Synopsis

This is a collection of stories in which nightmares and bad dreams are an essential part of the plot. In some stories the nightmare parallels or predicts events in waking life. In others, the nightmare takes over and the dreamer cannot get back to reality. There are also other stories which have a 'nightmarish' quality to them. The characters are trapped and unable to make an escape. You'll meet evil cats, ghostly maidens, talking fountains, murderous wives, screaming winds, man-eating dolphins, and dolls with blazing eyes. You'll hear cries in the night, feel cold tingles down your neck, get pursued by the gargles, and ride black horses over the ice. Many of the stories have been specially written for this book by authors such as Alison Prince, Sheila Lavelle, John Gordon, Adele Geras, and Dennis Hamley. Others are by well-known writers such as Kit Pearson, Michelle Magorian, Kingsley Amis, and Berlie Doherty.
