One Hundred Years of Poetry for Children

One Hundred Years of Poetry for Children

by Michael Harrison (Editor), Michael Harrison (Editor), Christopher Stuart-Clark (Editor)

Synopsis

This is a comprehensive celebration of 100 years of poetry written for children. The 20th century has seen an explosion in the number of poets writing for children, and in the amount of accessible poetry available to them. This collection is arranged by theme, and includes one poem by each of the writers. From Rudyard Kipling to Charles Causley, from Ogden Nash to Michael Rosen, the style and subject matter of the poetry ranges dramatically. There are familiar, famous poems, and some less well-known ones here, grouped together under such headings as childhood, war, animals and mystery. Michael Harrison and Christopher Stuart-Clark have brought together in this book a selection from 100 years of poetry from all over the English-speaking world.

Media Reviews
An outstanding collection. Instead of presenting more of the same literal, singsong poems for children, the editors mine the works of the last century to provide readers with a thematically arranged book of verse that they will be able to read and understand now, but will also think about for many
years to come... Careful selection of writers both well- and lesser-known... Could be used as a classroom text sure to spark discussion, but could also be read with gratifying results by young people discovering poetry on their own. --School Library Journal
A measured, thoughtful, and infinitely satisfying selection. --The Horn Book Guide
Some of the best 20th-century poets are represented by some of their finest poems. --The New York Times Book Review
Readers who dip in and browse will find great new poems to hold them fast. --Booklist
The book is full of discoveries, has a leitmotif of irony, and is utterly engrossing... Continues Oxford University Press's tradition of assembling the finest English language poetry. --The Boston Globe
A fine, well-rounded collection of classic and contemporary verse. --Atlanta Journal Constitution
